A winter moodboard
Now that I’ve gotten my colors done and I’m all discombobulated over it, I’m ignoring my sewing and my actual closet since it’s daunting to try to figure out how to make things work. Instead, I’ve been playing around on pinterest, and coming up with some outfit formulas and pieces that I like, before even trying to add color into the mix (it’s a bit of a happy accident that my inspo photos are all pretty neutral).
I had fun going through the exercise of just pinning randomly, and then identifying patterns, winnowing down to a more limited capsule. I don’t think a ton of this actually exists in my wardrobe, so we’ll see how far I go down the planning/sewing path with all of this, but I’m enjoying playing around!
A lot of these things can be mix and match, but some themes include:
monochromatic grey (I’ve been pinning these for years, but I actually have very little grey in my wardrobe, despite it having a big presence in the soft summer palette!)
turtleneck sweaters (and in dress form) - this one I actually do have covered in my wardrobe, but I haven’t been wearing them too much this year. I don’t think I’m quite perimenopausal, but I’ve been running warm this year, and haven’t broke out my sweaters much.
wide-leg cropped culottes with booties - a silhouette I love and dear hubby thinks looks ridiculous (at least on me - he nicknamed my favorite plaid pair as my hobo hobbit pants). I currently don’t have any culottes, and this one may actually make it to the sewing list, either as a flowy pair or structured (or maybe both!).
cropped or rolled (mostly skinny) jeans with boots (probably chunkier) - I’ve been doing the rolled jeans with my lace-up black boots lately and really enjoying it.
Honorable mention of blazer - I didn’t do an actual grouping of this one, mostly because it works with everything! I’ve been a blazer girl for a long time now.
Getting slightly dressier with this set:
polished tee and pleated or loose trousers - objectively, I really like the tom-boyish but polished look for a work uniform, but I’m never crazy about pleated pants on me in reality. We’ll see what I come up with here, but there is promise.
dolmen cardigan - another one that’s been in my pinterest for many years, and could work with the tee and trousers look above or the jeans and boots look from the previous picture. I don’t love a dolmen sleeve on me typically, but in cardigan form it’s not as overwhelming, as I can wear a fitted shirt underneath that is more visible.
structured button-down skirts and dresses - another similar look I’ve been pinning a lot lately. I particularly like the dress above, because I think it could work as a vest too over either skinny pants or flowy wide-leg culottes.
geometric neutral woven shirts - I wasn’t sure how these ones would fit into a theme, but when I was moving stuff around the theme immediately stuck out to me! These could work with any of the pants (skinny or wide-leg), and with the cardigan. Simple, but a little dressier than a tee.
Stay tuned to see if I keep up with my planning - next steps would be to identify a color scheme, identify specific garments, see if I have them in my wardrobe and what I would need to sew.
