What I finished: 2023 #2 - tan knit jumper dress
The past few weeks I’ve picked up the pace on sewing, so it’s time to catch up on documenting! The second project I finished this year was about a month ago, and all started when I was skimming through my pinned outfit ideas, and came across this knit dress I had pinned forever ago. I realized I had the perfect fabric to recreate it, and it was an easy and quick project to get me back into excited for sewing.
The pinned jumper is an actual knit garment, while mine is more of a jersey-knit fake cable, but it’s super soft and delightful. It may seem odd to start from a tee-shirt pattern, but I basically look at it as a knit block - a basic garment shape that I can tweak as I see fit. It was easy enough to extend it out to dress length, cut away the shoulders a touch (usually sleeveless garment bodice pieces don’t extend out all the way to the shoulders like a sleeved garment does), and add in the deep v-neck and pockets. The only wrinkle I had was figuring out how to do the band with the deep v-neck - I had done it before, but forgot the exact steps. And now, I’ve forgotten again both the steps and where I found them, but trust me, it’s easily googleable.
Pattern: My TNT tee pattern - Deer and Doe Plantain Tee
Pattern mods: lengthened into dress, made sleeveless, deep v-neck
Fabric: caramel knit from JoAnn Fabrics
Date started/finished: 2/18/23 - 2/18/23 (things either take me one day or 2 years, very little in-between!)
Notes: I always struggle a bit with wavy hems on knits. It’s better when I use my coverstitch machine (I have a combo coverstitch-serger, and I love it dearly), but I didn’t have the right color thread, so just did a regular machine hem. It’s not terrible, but one of those little things that bugs me.
I can’t get away with pasty legs with this color just yet, so black tights and boots it is! I’ve already worn it several times since I’ve finished it, and it’s a comfy and cute staple.
